Dubai Duty Free Founder Colm McLoughlin Dies at Age 81

The founder of Dubai Duty Free, Colm McLoughlin, died on Wednesday at the age of 81. He made a substantial contribution to the field by leading the growth of the retail sector at Dubai Airport for 41 years out of his 55 years in the duty-free industry.

The newspaper “Al Khaleej” reported that McLoughlin had died outside of the United Arab Emirates, accompanied by his little family.

The deceased was well known for his humility and commitment to hard work. He supported philanthropic causes around the world and contributed to the duty-free market even after he recently retired.

One of the most powerful people in the travel retail industry is McLoughlin, who was the Vice Chairman and CEO of Dubai Duty Free before that. On May 31, 2024, he announced his resignation as the head of Dubai Duty Free, following a 55-year term filled with noteworthy accomplishments.

After being hired by the Dubai Government to launch the new Dubai Duty Free on behalf of Aer Rianta, a division of the Irish Airports Authority, Colm McLoughlin joined the advisory team in Dubai in 1983.

However, McLoughlin’s decision to stay in the area was ultimately influenced by Dubai’s allure. He then became General Manager before being named CEO of Dubai Duty Free.
