During a trial fly at the city’s Khel Sankul ground, a hot air balloon operator died, turning a joyous morning into a tragic event in Rajasthan’s Baran district. Attendees and officials were shocked by the terrifying incident that happened at around 7 am on Thursday, the last day of the three-day Baran Utsav.
The victim, a 40-year-old Kota resident named Vasudev Khatri, was a seasoned hot air balloon specialist with over 20 years of experience. When the disaster happened during a safety test, he was preparing for a balloon performance, one of the festival’s main attractions.
DSP Omendra Singh Shekhawat claimed that Vasudev was conducting a solitary trial run. He gripped the ropes underneath to check the balloon’s stability while it was inflated. He lost his hold and fell from a great height directly in front of officials and early festival attendees when one of the supporting ropes broke mid-ascent.
Vasudev was taken to the Baran district hospital by emergency services right away. Still, because of the severe injuries he had received in the accident, the physicians there pronounced him dead. A thorough investigation has been started to ascertain whether negligence or defective equipment was a contributing factor, and his body has been sent for a post-mortem.
