Report: PM Modi Ignored Trump’s Four Calls During the Tariff Tension

According to the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), which cited sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declined to answer four calls from US President Donald Trump in recent weeks during the tariff spat. The “depth of his [Modi’s] anger, but also his caution” is what the study says caused this.

Similar allegations have been made by the Japanese newspaper Nikkei Asia, which claims that Prime Minister Modi’s refusal to answer Trump’s calls “heightened Trump’s frustration. Since President Trump hiked tariffs on Indian exports to an astounding 50%, the highest rate for any nation outside Brazil, relations between New Delhi and Washington have been sour. India’s purchases of Russian crude oil are subject to an additional 25% tariff.

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi promising to “never compromise” the interests of the nation’s farmers, India has stated that it is ready to resist pressure from the US. According to the German journal, the trade dispute between the United States and India shows that New Delhi would not give in to pressure from Washington. According to FAZ, “there are signs indicating that Modi felt insulted,” and the premier’s reluctance to speak with Trump shows how annoyed he is by the US president’s behavior.
