During the Winter Olympics in Milan, an odd war is taking place online rather than on the rinks or slopes. Freestyle skier Eileen Gu and figure-skater Alysa Liu are at its core. Being young women of American-Chinese descent who were born and reared in the United States gives them a lot in common. They are also industry champions.
Despite this, one is being praised as a pathfinder and the other as a traitor. Some Americans, at least, believe that to be the case. The reverse is true on Chinese social media.
Some Americans appear to take offence at that. “Eileen Gu receives millions of dollars to compete for China. Alysa Liu is the daughter of a Chinese immigrant who took part in the demonstrations in Tiananmen Square. One post on X stated, “Be an Alysa Liu in a world of Eileen Gus.
Rather than the general public or the sports community, political analysts and a vociferous minority on X seem to be the main sources of this response. The battle between the US and China, the two largest economies in the world, is the underlying current; they are continually competing for a competitive advantage across everything from trade to technology.
