A class action case that may earn millions in UK shares of a £3bn claim against Apple is to go to trial. Consumer group Which? has accused the internet giant of “locking” users into its cloud service. It claims 40 million iCloud customers could be in line for almost £77 each if they win.
The claim will include anyone who used iCloud between November 2018 and June 2026 and who were resident in the UK on 8 June, unless they opt out. Apple has previously dismissed the charges as groundless, claiming no consumer is obliged to use the iCloud service as there are alternatives, and “strongly disagrees” with the ruling and intends to appeal. Apple offers a modest amount of free storage for its users, but if it runs out, they are pushed to pay for iCloud to back up photographs, videos, messages, contacts and other stuff from their devices.
Prices start at 99p a month for 50GB and go up to £54.99 a month for 12TB. Apple blocks competing storage services from accessing all of its devices, citing security, but that means iCloud has more functionality than non-Apple options.
