Spanish Prime Minister Says She won’t be a Witness in Her Wife’s Corruption Case

Lawyers at the hearing said that Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s prime minister, had declined to testify on Tuesday as a witness in a judicial investigation into allegations of corruption and influence peddling against his wife, which made him consider resigning in April.

Former Interior Minister Antonio Camacho, the attorney for Sanchez’s wife, claimed that Sanchez’s testimony lasted for just two minutes. Close relatives, including spouses, are allowed by Spanish law to decline to answer questions when called upon by a judge.

The actions are a part of an initial probe into whether Gomez obtained sponsors for a master’s degree course she taught at a university by using her status as the premier’s wife.

Sanchez has refuted the charges against her, claiming that her enemies in politics on the right were behind them and that they were unfounded.

Peinado interviewed with Sanchez at his official residence, the Moncloa Palace Government Headquarters in Madrid.

Along with him were Gomez’s attorney, representatives of the prosecutor’s office, and an attorney for the far-right group VOX. VOX uses a legal tool called “the people’s accusation” to allow private citizens to file criminal complaints against public officials.
