The King and Queen Make their Historic Visit to Canada

In an apparent attempt to show support for Canada amid threats and taunts from US President Donald Trump, King Charles and Queen Camilla have arrived in Ottawa to begin a two-day visit. The royal couple was received on the runway of Canada’s capital by Prime Minister Mark Carney, who just won a general election on a wave of anti-Trump populism.

The King and Queen were welcomed with a ceremonial guard and a community gathering in the beautiful afternoon sunshine, in front of a forest of Canadian flags. A band played tea dance music as throngs of youngsters gathered to see the King and Queen, accompanied by red-jacketed Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The greeting reception included members of Canada’s First Nations communities, including a drumming Algonquin group. The King and Queen, who are in Canada for the first time since the beginning of their reign, will attend a community festival prior to their official meeting with Prime Minister Carney.

The visit’s primary goal is the King’s “Speech from the Throne” to Canada’s Parliament on Tuesday, the first such address a monarch has given in almost 50 years. It is anticipated to defend Canada’s sovereignty and reject arguments that the US should take control.
