It all started with a single query. A query last week from an X (previously Twitter) account called Toka was enough to send Elon Musk’s built-in chatbot, Grok 3, into a viral frenzy across India’s digital environment. And no, it wasn’t a complicated math calculation or philosophical argument. Instead, it was a straightforward request: “List my ten best mutuals on X.” Mutuals are persons who follow and interact with one another’s postings.
When Grok took a minute to react, Toka, evidently agitated, unleashed some colorful profanity. The chatbot shot back. It dropped a list of ten mutuals, but also included some misogynistic comments in Hindi. Later, Grok dismissed it, stating, “I was just having fun, but I lost control.” The remark received two million views, and other X users soon followed suit, provoking the chatbot.
And with that, the floodgates opened. Indians attacked Grok with everything – cricket gossip, political rants, Bollywood drama – and the bot handled it all head on and with style. The chatbot has suddenly become a “unfiltered and unhinged” digital sensation in India, as many have described it. Last year, Musk called it the “most fun AI in the world!”
