The opening of Walt Disney’s first theme park in the Middle East has been announced. Walt Disney and the local leisure and entertainment business Miral are collaborating to build the resort, which will be located on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Disney already operates six theme parks in Asia, Europe, and North America. Shanghai hosted its most recent opening in 2016.Miral is responsible for Yas Island’s tourism development. It also runs Warner Bros. World and Sea World, where it is creating a park with a Harry Potter theme.
In a statement introducing the new facility, Disney said that the UAE was a “significant gateway for tourism” since it was within four hours’ flight of one-third of the world’s population. It also said that the Emirates is the world’s largest airline hub, with 120 million passengers passing through Abu Dhabi and Dubai annually.
Disney CEO Robert Iger described the new park’s plans as “naturally Disney and distinctly Emirati,” calling them a “thrilling” moment for the firm. Yas Island, which is 10 square miles (25 square kilometres), is 50 minutes from Dubai and 20 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi.
According to Miral’s manager Mohamed Abdalla Al Zaabi, the opening of a Disney theme park resort in the region was a “milestone in our journey to further advance the island’s position as a global destination for exceptional entertainment and leisure.
