As rumours circulate that Washington may accept white Afrikaner refugees as early as next week, South Africa has denounced the United States. Although the White House has not officially confirmed the date, a memo seen by the BBC’s US partner CBS characterises the possible resettlement as a “priority” for President Donald Trump’s administration.
In a statement released on Friday, South Africa’s foreign ministry called the alleged action “politically motivated” and intended to erode the country’s “constitutional democracy. Trump opened the possibility of Afrikaners resettling in the United States in February by describing them as victims of “racial discrimination” in an executive order.
The South African government stated that while they would not prevent the departure of those selected for resettlement, they had asked the United States to guarantee that they had undergone thorough screening and were free of outstanding criminal charges.
The South African statement went on to say that there was no evidence of any racial group being the target of violent crimes on farms and that accusations of prejudice against the nation’s white population were baseless. White farmers are allegedly being killed on purpose due to their race, according to several organisations that defend their rights.
