UAE Introduces a New Dirham Emblem Based on the Flag of the Country

On Thursday, the UAE Central Bank presented the new digital and physical symbol for the country’s currency. The symbol was created to improve financial and monetary stability by taking the English name of the dirham and using it as a worldwide representation of the country’s currency. It features two horizontal lines that symbolise the stability of the UAE dirham and were inspired by the UAE flag.

In contrast, the digital dirham sign uses the colours of the UAE flag to represent pride and national identity, with a circle encircling the physical currency symbol. The symbol’s selection demonstrates the national currency’s global reach, receptivity to a more prosperous future, and dedication to creating a cutting-edge, locally orientated financial ecosystem with an international viewpoint.

This idea, which has its roots in the national identity of the United Arab Emirates, reimagines the flag’s lines and incorporates them into the design of the letter “D” for dirham. The pointed curves are modelled after the calligraphy of classical Arabic, where characters like Thuluth and Diwani frequently have sweeping, sharp ends that convey power and elegance.
