Catholicism has never been more visible in American politics, as the Trump administration openly embraces advisers and officials who proudly claim faith has affected their perspectives.
But any excitement on the American Make America Great Again right about the new Pope this week rapidly vanished as prominent advocates from Donald Trump’s Maga movement arrived to a disappointing conclusion: the first American Pope does not appear to put “America first. Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, is not well-known for his political views.
He has expressed compassion for the poor and immigrants, selected a name that may indicate to more liberal church leadership, and appears to have supported the liberal-leaning Pope Francis while criticising the US president’s policies on social media.
But so far, the president has simply stated that Leo’s election was a “great honour” for the United States. Nonetheless, some of Trump’s most famous followers attacked Pope Leo, accusing him of being a potential danger to Trump and of following Pope Francis on issues such as immigration. I mean it’s kind of jaw-dropping,” Trump’s former senior strategist Steve Bannon told the BBC on Friday, referring to Leo’s victory.
