A day after the United States said Israel had been urged to boost humanitarian deliveries to Gaza, the chief of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees issued a warning on Wednesday about the danger of hunger in the enclave.<\/p>\n
“There is a real risk today… that we enter a situation where famine or acute malnutrition is unfortunately again a likelihood,” UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini said at a press conference in Berlin, referring to the impending winter and the population of Gaza’s compromised immune systems.<\/p>\n
Israel’s retaliation onslaught on Gaza following Hamas’ October 7 offensive last year has devastated large swaths of the territory. The UN has sent warnings to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians about Israel’s escalating activities in the northern part of the beleaguered region.<\/p>\n
According to Lazzarini, Gaza has “become a kind of wasteland, which I would say is almost unliveable” and the humanitarian situation there has deteriorated.<\/p>\n
He stated that “over the last two to three weeks there was no convoy entering into the north except yesterday” about humanitarian delivery to Gaza.<\/p>\n
“We estimate the number needed to be much, much higher, but we have a huge drop of convoys in the south with only an average of fifty to sixty for two million people,” Lazzarini added.<\/p>\n
