Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra revealed on Wednesday that she nearly fell victim to a phone hoax involving Artificial Intelligence (AI) impersonating the voice of a foreign leader. The Prime Minister, the youngest daughter of telecom mogul and former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, said she got a message in a voice that sounded like a well-known politician but did not name the individual. In the video, he indicated he was looking forward to seeing me and working with me,” she added.<\/p>\n
She missed a call from the same number that night, and a second voice message the next day raised her concerns. The voice said Thailand is the only Asean country which has not yet made a donation \u00a0when I heard that, I thought ‘this is not right’, she went on.<\/p>\n
A text message asking for money to be paid to a bank account outside Thailand quickly followed, confirming her suspicions.
\n“I knew it for sure when I saw that,” she admitted. Paetongtarn didn’t specify when she received the communications.<\/p>\n
In Thailand, so-called “call centre scams” are popular, in which fraudsters impersonate police, government officials, or bank employees, frequently employing automated “robocalls” to initiate contact. Last Monday, Paetongtarn, 38, reported more than $400 million in assets to Thailand’s anti-corruption commission. Her father, Thaksin, who once owned Manchester City football club, has a net worth of $2.1 billion, according to Forbes, making him Thailand’s tenth richest person.<\/p>\n
