According to a statement from her representative, Roberta Flack, the Grammy-winning soul singer best known for her acclaimed renditions of love ballads like “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” as well as her business partnerships and social activism, passed away. She was eighty-eight.<\/p>\n
Elaine Schock, Flack’s publicist, told CNN that Flack passed away on Monday at home with her family by her side. Her death came after several years of health issues, including a late 2022 public diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. At the time, Flack’s managers claimed that her degenerative illness, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, prevented her from singing.<\/p>\n
But as a composer of her songs and an interpreter of others’, Flack had already solidified her reputation as one of the defining voices of her generation, achieving numerous chart-topping successes and earning innumerable honours: The daughter of a church organist with classical training received 14 Grammy nominations and five wins over her career, including back-to-back Record of the Year victories and a lifetime achievement award in 2020.<\/p>\n
Questlove, a filmmaker, musical director of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” and drummer for The Roots, honoured Flack. He posted a vintage image of the late artist, commenting, “Thank You Roberta Flack. Leave in melody.<\/p>\n
