The frenzy to make Ghibli-style AI art with ChatGPT’s image-generation tool resulted in a record number of users for OpenAI’s chatbot last week, straining its infrastructure and momentarily limiting the feature’s use.<\/p>\n
The viral fad saw users from all over the world fill social media with images modelled on the hand-drawn style of the iconic Japanese animation business, Studio Ghibli, founded by renowned director Hayao Miyazaki and known for films such as “Spirited Away” and “My Neighbour Totoro.<\/p>\n
We added one million people in the previous hour,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in an X post on Monday, comparing it to the one million users added in five days following ChatGPT’s explosive launch more than two years ago.<\/p>\n
According to SensorTower statistics, active users, in-app subscription revenue, and app downloads hit an all-time high last week after the AI business released improvements to its GPT-4o model, enabling advanced picture generating capabilities.<\/p>\n
According to the market intelligence organisation, global app downloads and weekly active users on the ChatGPT app jumped 11% and 5%, respectively, from the previous week, while in-app purchase income increased by 6%.<\/p>\n
