After weeks of discussions with conservative holdouts, House Republicans narrowly defeated President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson to adopt a comprehensive package of tax incentives worth billions of dollars.<\/p>\n
Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” was approved by a vote of 215 to 214, with one voter present and two Republicans joining Democrats in opposing it. The Senate will now have the opportunity to adopt or amend the bill’s contents.<\/p>\n
Johnson said it “gets Americans back to winning again” and his supporters on Capitol Hill have hailed its approval as a success. The bill, which has long been a top objective for Trump, boosts defence spending and finances the president’s mass deportations while extending tax cuts set to expire in 2017 during his first administration.<\/p>\n
Additionally, it temporarily removes taxes on gratuities and overtime, two significant pledges Trump made throughout his victorious 2024 presidential campaign. What we’re going to do together this morning is absolutely significant and it will make all the difference in the everyday lives of hard working Americans,” Johnson stated prior to the vote on the floor.<\/p>\n
The measure also includes significant budget cutbacks, notably to Snap, a food assistance program that serves over 42 million Americans, and Medicaid, a healthcare program for Americans with lower incomes.<\/p>\n
