Merseyside Police responded around 6 p.m. on Monday after receiving reports that a car had driven into a crowd during a parade. Footage shared on social media captured a dark-colored car with a shattered rear window swerving into parade-goers, knocking people to the ground. Some were seen trying to help victims, including individuals trapped beneath the vehicle. Bystanders also attempted to stop the driver, with one person opening the car door briefly before the man inside slammed it shut and drove forward again into the crowd.<\/p>\n
At a press conference Monday night, Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims stated that the event appeared to be an isolated incident and was not being treated as an act of terrorism. She confirmed that no additional suspects were being sought.<\/p>\n
A 53-year-old man from the Liverpool area was arrested at the scene. Authorities believe he was behind the wheel of the vehicle involved in the crash.<\/p>\n
According to the ambulance service, at least 47 people were injured, including four children. Of those, 27 were transported to hospitals, and two\u00a0 one of them a child\u00a0 suffered serious injuries.<\/p>\n
