The company that makes Oreo has sued Aldi, a low-cost retailer, in the US, claiming that it “blatantly” copied the packaging of its well-known treats. According to court records, Mondel\u0113z International said that Aldi likely “deceives” customers and “rides the coattails” of the company’s “attraction, fame, and prestige” by using identical packaging.<\/p>\n
The food giant is also the creator of Wheat Thins, Nutter Butter, Chips Ahoy!, and Ritz, which it claims Aldi has copied with its “discount” versions. When the BBC asked Aldi US for comment, the company’s British equivalent emphasised that it is not a party to the litigation.<\/p>\n
According to a representative for Aldi UK, they are “under the same ownership but operate as completely separate businesses” on the BBC. Mondel\u0113z filed the case in May, claiming that it had contacted Aldi on many occasions over the “confusingly similar packaging.”<\/p>\n
According to the lawsuit, Aldi has persisted in producing “unacceptable copies” after discontinuing or changing the packaging of some items. The business said that the Mondel\u0113z brand would “irreparably harm” if Aldi was permitted to continue with its product lines. Side-by-side photos contrasting the looks of Aldi’s and Mondel\u0113z’s products were submitted in the case.<\/p>\n
