The inquiry into claims that Jair Bolsonaro, the former right-wing president of Brazil, and his supporters planned a coup after he lost the 2022 election has been headed by Judge Moraes.Bolsonaro has referred to Judge Moraes as a “dictator” and refuted such accusations. US President Donald Trump signed an executive order raising tariffs on Brazil to 50% shortly after the measures were announced.<\/p>\n
Although he described the sanctions against de Moraes as a “unacceptable” meddling in the nation’s legal system, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated that his country was open to trade talks with the United States.<\/p>\n
He said on X that the actions jeopardize “national sovereignty and the historical relationship between the two countries” and that Brazil has accrued “a significant trade deficit in goods and services with the United States over the past few decades.<\/p>\n
Earlier Brazil month, Trump threatened to apply the high tariffs in a letter to Lula that he posted on social media. In it, Trump charged that Brazil was engaging in a “witch hunt” against Bolsonaro and launching “attacks” on US tech businesses.<\/p>\n
