US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping had agreed on a deal regarding the future of TikTok\u2019s US operations during a phone call. However, Beijing has not confirmed the agreement.<\/p>\n
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the call as \u201cproductive\u201d and said he appreciated Xi\u2019s support for the proposal, which would reportedly involve TikTok\u2019s US business being sold to a group of American investors. The Chinese state news agency\u00a0Xinhua, however, gave a more cautious account, quoting Xi as saying that China \u201cwelcomes negotiations over TikTok\u201d but without directly endorsing the deal.<\/p>\n
TikTok, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, has faced mounting pressure in the US, where officials have warned it could be banned unless its American operations are separated from its parent company. Trump has extended the deadline for a forced sale four times since January, with the latest deadline now set for December.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Friday, Trump said the call with Xi also touched on broader trade issues. He confirmed that both leaders plan to meet at the\u00a0Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit\u00a0in South Korea at the end of October. Trump also stated he would travel to China early next year and that Xi would visit the United States \u201cat an appropriate time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the optimism, Trump admitted the deal was not yet finalised. \u201cWe look forward to getting that deal closed,\u201d he told reporters, adding that the US would maintain \u201cvery tight control\u201d over the app once an agreement is signed.<\/p>\n
