After weeks of protests demanding his resignation, Madagascar’s embattled President Andry Rajoelina has declared he is taking refuge in a “safe place” following an attempted assassination.<\/p>\n
Rajoelina, 51, said that “a group of military personnel and politicians planned to assassinate me” during a live Facebook broadcast to the country. Although he did not disclose his whereabouts, there had been unsubstantiated rumors that he had escaped the nation aboard a French military plane. It comes after two weeks of widespread protests to remove him from office, mostly spearheaded by young protesters.<\/p>\n
The president dismissed his whole government and made other ineffective concessions in response to Rajoelina’s failed attempts to appease the young demonstrators, known as “Gen Z Mada.”<\/p>\n
He hasn’t been seen since Wednesday, and Rajoelina’s office claimed over the weekend that an effort was being made to remove him from office.<\/p>\n
As soldiers threatened to take control of the state TV offices on the island in the Indian Ocean, his speech to the nation was repeatedly postponed Monday due to the instability.<\/p>\n
Finally, he stated in the Facebook broadcast: “Since September 25, there have been coup attempts and attempts on my life. A group of politicians and military officials plotted my assassination.<\/p>\n
