As a result of an unexpected Hamas comeback in some Palestinian territory, pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s post-war Gaza’s governance, leading to new divisions among Israel’s leaders.<\/p>\n
In addition to engaging Hezbollah in almost daily gunfire along Lebanon’s northern border, the Israeli army has been fighting Hamas throughout Gaza for more than seven months.<\/p>\n
Netanyahu is also pressured by Washington to swiftly end the conflict and avoid being involved in a long counterinsurgency campaign.<\/p>\n
Washington has previously called for a “revitalised” form of the Palestinian Authority to govern Gaza after the war.<\/p>\n
But Netanyahu has rejected any role for the PA in post-war Gaza, saying Thursday that it “supports terror, educates terror, finances terror<\/p>\n
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant personally attacked Netanyahu for not ruling out the possibility of an Israeli government in Gaza following the war.<\/p>\n
A significant rift among leading politicians has been exposed by the Israeli premier’s blatant rejection of Palestinian leadership in Gaza after the war, and relations with the United States, a key ally, have been strained. Analysts claim that the ambiguity only helps Hamas, whose leader has maintained that the region cannot be governed by anyone else without its participation.<\/p>\n
Analyst Mairav Zonszein of the International Crisis Group told AFP that Hamas would “continue to grow without an alternative to fill the vacuum.<\/p>\n
