Telegram, an encrypted messaging app, is set to integrate AI technologies created by Elon Musk’s xAI. Telegram CEO Pavel Durov announced the agreement, stating that his company will incorporate Grok, an AI helper, inside Telegram’s applications and distribute it to the platform’s “billion+ users.
According to Mr. Durov, the deal, which expires in a year, would give his business $300 million (£223 million) in cash and stock from xAI in addition to 50% of the money made from xAI memberships sold through Telegram. “We win together!” he said on social media.
It comes after Meta included an AI service into WhatsApp, its messaging app, a move it had to justify after customers complained. According to Hanna Kahlert, a media analyst at Midia Research, the action was in line with the trend of “social and AI trying to absorb each other,” as reported by BBC News. However, she noted, it wasn’t always what the consumers desired.
Social media platforms are still mostly used by users to communicate with and view the updates of their friends, she continued. Inherently replacing it with AI in direct messaging undermines user trust and detracts from the present USP.
