As AI-Assisted Flying gains Traction, would UAE Airlines Operate with just One Pilot?

Of the inaugural Aviation Future Week on Tuesday, a top executive of Dubai-based Emirates Airlines told Khaleej Times that, given the speed at which technology is developing, especially artificial intelligence (AI), passenger planes operating with just one pilot may soon become a reality.

According to Adel Al Redha, Emirates Airlines’ deputy president and chief operating officer, aviation technology is developing quickly. Artificial intelligence’s predictive powers may improve airline interoperability, efficiency, and safety, ultimately reducing the need for human pilots in the cockpit.

The topic of cutting the airline crew from two pilots to one has long been debated, but it has gained attention again after a Turkish Airlines pilot died last week after falling in midair. To make an emergency landing in New York, the co-pilot took over the controls.A 57-year-old American Airlines pilot passed away during a nighttime trip from Phoenix to Boston in a previous event in 2015. After taking command, the first officer declared an emergency. A big commercial aircraft must always have two pilots in the cockpit, according to the US Federal Aviation Administration.
