According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the guy who attacked his colleague pilot and attempted to take over a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was subjected to “Islamist radical indoctrination”.
The Flydubai plane dropped more than 17,000ft (5,200m) two hours into its voyage on Wednesday, but passengers and crew defeated the attacker and regained control, allowing it to safely land.
Netanyahu told Fox News that it appeared “very likely” that the attacker, an Omani national, “was going to down the plane”. Meanwhile, the UAE’s national news agency claims that investigations are underway to discover “whether the incident was linked to any terrorist activity or purpose”.
The co-pilot is now being questioned in Saudi Arabia, where the plane made an emergency landing. However, UAE officials claim they have jurisdiction over the event because the aircraft involved in the attack is registered and flies under their flag.
Netanyahu told Fox News that when the attacker was apprehended and tied up by passengers and crew, he was “calling out to the aircrew ‘kill me, kill me’, so it’s clear he was suicidal – that’s not a question.
