To ease supply constraints that have driven up prices, the G7 has decided to release 100 million barrels of oil and diesel. A “substantial release” of diesel is part of the plan, according to the group of advanced economies, which includes the US.
Before the midterm elections in November, President Donald Trump threatened to outlaw diesel exports, which would have relieved pressure on US consumers’ costs but increased prices elsewhere.
The G7 claimed that its members had now decided to “refrain from export restrictions on energy and energy products” on one another in a unified statement. In addition to the US, UK, Canada, Japan, Germany, Italy, and France, the EU also participates in G7 meetings.
If European nations did not agree to increase their own stocks on the market, Trump had threatened to outlaw US diesel shipments. Europe has just agreed to release a massive amount of their heavily stocked Diesel Oil,” he said on social media on Friday. The procedure will start right away. US farmers, truckers, and companies “should not be left carrying the burden” as prices increase, according to his Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
