After Adani Enterprises filed a lawsuit alleging it was defamatory, an Indian court ordered the removal of an online documentary that Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia had posted accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and billionaire Gautam Adani of cronyism. The High Court in the eastern city of Kolkata was informed by Adani’s flagship company, Adani Enterprises, that the documentary, which received millions of views on social media in recent days, was full of false information and had prompted questions from some of the company’s investors, who were not named in the court order.
The documentary “is not an account of proceedings or a news report.” The court’s late-Monday takedown order for YouTube, X, and Meta stated, “It is a dramatised narrative.” Opponents of Modi have frequently claimed that the prime leader has a tight relationship with Adani and that the business magnate has been treated favourably over the years. Both the Adani group and the Indian government have consistently refuted those claims.
Adani Enterprises informed the court in its challenge that while it does not aim to limit constructive criticism of corporate concentration or government policy, Bhatia had concealed important information, per the court’s ruling. The US-based Bhatia stated on his X account that the case seeks damages of 500 million rupees ($5.25 million). He wrote “Truth is on my side” in one X post.He stated, “I think the documentary has rattled Adani Enterprises Limited and struck a nerve at the highest levels.
