While tracking the Russian battleship in the Baltic Sea, Denmark has accused it of firing two emergency lights at one of its helicopters. The incident occurred during a “routine” surveillance operation on Monday, according to the Danish government, which has summoned the Russian ambassador. The Russian action was described as “reckless” and intended to “intimidate and divide” by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. Despite accusing Danish helicopters of making “dangerous manoeuvres” close to Russian vessels, Russia declared it will “thoroughly investigate” the incident.
The latest security concern on the alliance’s eastern frontier, where tensions are still high due to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, occurred the same day that NATO soldiers shot down a drone over Lithuania. The Danish military released the following statement about the Baltic Sea incident: “One of the air force’s Fennec helicopters was today fired at with flares during a routine photographic operation of a Russian frigate, which was located in international waters off Gedser.” The statement further stated that one of the two flares shot at the chopper passed near it. The act was deemed “completely unacceptable” by the Danish foreign ministry.
