It was an uneasy déjà vu when Dania Hanatsheh was bussed out of an Israeli jail this week and handed out in Ramallah among a sea of joyful Palestinians. As part of an agreement between Israel and Hamas to halt the fighting in Gaza, the 22-year-old lady was released for the second time after being detained for almost five months. Hanatsheh remarked that her joy at being free once more is mixed with grief over the destruction in Gaza and fear of future detention, which is a typical emotion in her society.
Hanatsheh, one of 90 women and teenagers freed by Israel during the first part of the ceasefire agreement, stated, “Palestinian families are ready to be arrested at any moment.” You feel powerless, as though there is nothing you can do to defend yourself.
A deal to liberate 33 hostages from Gaza, enhance fuel and assistance supply to the region, and pause violence for six weeks will also see the release of over 2,000 Palestinian inmates. Some of the inmates who will be released have been convicted of killing Israelis, while many others have been imprisoned for offences like throwing stones or Molotov bombs.
