In honour of Palestinian Heritage Day, an art exhibition debuted in the Philippines this week. The University of the Philippines (UP)-College of Fine Arts (CFA) Art Gallery features a variety of images, crafts, and devotional items that depict the Palestinian way of life. The month-long exhibition, “Palestine: Living Heritage, Enduring Steadfastness,” was opened by UP President Angelo Jimenez and Palestinian ambassador to the Philippines Mounir Anastas. It provides visitors with a direct connection to the country’s ongoing cultural traditions.
Images of Gaza’s historical landmarks before and after they were destroyed by Israeli occupation forces are contrasted with pictures of ancient sites throughout the West Bank. The exhibit’s first docent, Ambassador Anastas, described traditional Palestinian arts, including devotional objects, painting, and needlework. He thanked the CFA, the institution, and its Office of International Linkages for their dedication to international solidarity, education, and cultural preservation. The exhibit, according to CFA, offers evidence of a culture’s lasting beauty and vitality in the face of the deliberate destruction of Palestinian identity, communal memory, history, and territory.
The exhibition, according to the top fine arts institution in the Philippines, presents “Palestinian visual culture to testify to the catastrophic loss of a people’s physical and cultural memory alongside the genocide happening across the Gaza Strip today.” The display spreads the message of solidarity and the need for social justice by highlighting both concrete and intangible cultural assets throughout this crisis, according to the institution.
