The director of national intelligence has been appointed by US President Donald Trump to lead a new taskforce on artificial intelligence. According to Trump, this taskforce will coordinate government interaction with businesses, consumers, and “religious organisations.” Jay Clayton will lead a taskforce that has been criticised by Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, who has advocated for AI regulation. Despite discussions about the possible dangers of AI and its implications for humans, Trump has opposed the notion of legislation to regulate its advancement.
The chiefs of significant AI companies and the president signed a “morally binding” statement last week that holds them accountable for guaranteeing the security of their own technology. “The Super Intelligence Force will coordinate the Federal Government’s engagement with Consumers, Public Interest Groups, Religious Organisations, Critical Infrastructure Providers, and Super Intelligence Companies,” Trump wrote on social media in an attempt to unilaterally rebrand AI as “super intelligence.”
Emil Michael, the undersecretary of defence for science and engineering, Andrew Ferguson, the head of the Federal Trade Commission, and Clayton, a former chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission, will also serve on the group. Trump and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles will receive direct reports from it. Trump has resisted any slowing in the advancement of AI. The US is ahead of China in the competition, he claimed, adding, “And, frankly, I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI, wins.”
