Its leadership seems quite monarchical for a party that boasts of its size in the second-largest democracy in the world. While his devoted comrade Dolours Montserrat was chosen without opposition to the post of secretary general with 91% of the vote, Manfred Weber was “re-elected” with 502 of 563 votes (89). This kind of ringing endorsement is typically seen in North Korean “elections.” This allows him to command an ascending EPP that consists of 188 MEPs in the European Parliament, 13 commissioners, the majority of EU heads of state, and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
If Valencian sentiment is any indication, the party’s centre of gravity is shifting to the right. Congress members were quite eager to see Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni convert her Fratelli d’Italia party to the EPP, according to our correspondent Meabh McMahon. In the meantime, a rather unimpressive address by Tánaiste, Ireland’s deputy prime minister Simon Harris, struck a more moderate note.
To improve collaboration with other pro-European parties, Harris asked fellow party members to reach out across the aisle. “The need for a strong centrist pro-European leadership has never been greater,” Harris said, but he sat down to a largely silent reception.
