In this exclusive interview with Entrepreneur Mirror, Dr. Christian Stotz shares his remarkable transition from a 32-year banking career to founding Jostal Watches in 2025. Rooted in Germany’s historic Black Forest watchmaking tradition—a region beloved by Indian tourists—Jostal crafts reliable, soulful mechanical timepieces for everyday life. Discover his journey, business insights, and advice for aspiring entrepreneurs.
Early Background and Career Journey
Curious about the roots of a banker-turned-watchmaker, we asked: “Could you share a bit about your early background, education, and the key experiences that shaped your career journey?”
Dr. Christian Stotz mentioned, “My name is Christian Stotz. I am 59 years old, married, and a father of three wonderful children. I studied literature and economics and completed a PhD. After 32 years in commercial banking, I founded my watch brand Jostal at the beginning of 2025.
Jostal Watches manufactures wristwatches that put the Black Forest at the center; a region that is also very popular with Indian tourists. The Black Forest has been one of the centers of the German watch industry for many hundreds of years. I want to reconnect with this tradition and offer reliable, independent companions for everyday life.”

Company Evolution Since Inception
Eager to track a startup’s first steps in a timeless industry, we asked: “How has your company evolved since its inception? (e.g., team size, market reach, revenue milestones).
Dr. Christian Stotz shared,”.At the end of December 2025, we presented our first collection and launched our website www.jostal-uhren.de, making our first sales. It got off to a very promising start. Each model in the first collection is limited to 99 copies, so interested parties should not wait too long. Naturally, it will take some time for a new brand to become recognized by consumers. So far, it is a small company, but after just a few weeks, that’s not surprising either.
Contribution to the Regional Ecosystem
Wondering how local roots fuel global appeal, we asked: “How does your business contribute to the ecosystem in your region?”
Dr. Christian Stotz explained,” Since the Black Forest is the focal point, I try to have all suppliers and service providers within 100 km, so that I can reach anyone within an hour. This doesn’t work for every detail, but at the beginning, with almost everything. Watches and packaging come from the Black Forest, and even the service provider who takes care of corporate identity is very close by. I am convinced that such a network is not only more sustainable but also increases the credibility of the brand.” He further reflected.

Three Qualities Critical for Success
Probing the heart of luxury craftsmanship, we asked: “What three qualities do you believe are critical for success in your industry?”
“I think authenticity, quality, and emotions are crucial. In fact, the truth is that no one really needs a mechanical watch today. What you do need, however, is an emotional connection to an object with a soul.” Christian explained.
Adapting to Technological Changes
Intrigued by blending heritage with modern shopping, we asked: “How has your organization adapted to technological changes? Share a key innovation you’ve implemented.”
With that, Christian shared, “Buying habits have changed massively in recent years. When my great-grandfather opened his watch shop in 1900, no one could have imagined that today it is possible to buy complex and valuable items without ever holding them in your hands. We are set up for this with high-quality photos, precise and atmospherically dense descriptions, and a business model that is 100% focused on online sales.”

Navigating Key Challenges
Seeking wisdom for fellow founders, we asked: “How would you guide someone to navigate the key challenges you faced when establishing yourself in this industry?”
Lastly, Christian advised, “Invest a lot of time in your brand before you start. The brand idea must fit and be reflected in every detail of the product. Write it down. Read it again, and adjust it until it’s right. Build a network before you start; partners, producers, and reliable suppliers who support your idea.”
