Citing that it would be equivalent to “giving away secrets” to America’s primary economic foe, US President Donald Trump has rejected any collaborative venture in artificial intelligence (AI) with China.
Despite growing public anxiety, Trump once again urged against imposing any restrictions on technology that would impede future progress when speaking at an event in Washington on Tuesday.
Beijing and Washington announced the start of a new AI dialogue following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the White House last week. Additional discussions are planned for November. To avoid misunderstandings during AI-related crises, the two nations also developed a new communication channel.
Trump said the US is “leading by a lot” in the AI industry and does not want to mix it up with possible rivals during Tuesday’s event marking the launch of America.gov, a new AI-powered website intended to expedite government services.He stated, “If we do that, we’re going to be giving away a lot of our secrets that they [China] or anybody else would want to have. Frankly, there is nobody in third place it’s all between us and China.” Although the subject of AI was brought up during his meeting with President Xi last week.
