A Blast Ripped Through a Structure in the Iranian Coastal City of Bandar Abbas, According to Official Television

A gas leak swept through a building in the Iranian southern port city of Bandar Abbas on Saturday, state media said, as tensions in the region remain high owing to US President Donald Trump’s frequent warnings of military action against Iran. Although the reason of the explosion, which killed a small child, was initially unknown, the city’s fire chief later confirmed that it was caused by a gas leak, according to semi-official news agency Tasnim.

The Iranian state-affiliated Fars News Agency was obliged to reject rumours that Brigadier General Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, had been assassinated. That rejection heightened regional concerns as Trump repeated his demands on Wednesday for Iran to sign a “equitable” nuclear deal or face another potential US military assault.

Fars uploaded footage on Saturday showing the blast ripping through the lower four levels of a nine-story building in Bandar Abbas. According to the agency, the explosion killed a four-year-old girl and injured 14 others. According to the report, emergency services were on the site. The city’s fire chief told the semi-official news outlet Tasnim that all residents of the building had been evacuated.
