According to the BBC, the son of a British couple who were arrested by the Taliban five months ago worries that they could perish in captivity. On February 1, Peter Reynolds, 80, and Barbie, 76, were taken into custody as they were on their way back to their residence in the central Afghan province of Bamiyan.
According to their son Jonathan Reynolds, their health was fast declining, with his mother being “numb” from malnourishment and anemia, and his father experiencing severe convulsions. The reason for their detention is unknown, but in February, a Taliban spokesman informed the BBC that the organization intended to free the pair “as soon as possible.
The UN has also referred to their confinement as “inhumane” and warned that they might die “in such degrading conditions” if they do not immediately receive medical attention.
According to Mr. Reynolds, waiting for his parents’ release after they spent 18 years in Afghanistan, where they held citizenship and oversaw educational initiatives, had been “harrowing and surreal” for five months.
Even though the Taliban prohibited women from working and prohibited education for girls older than twelve, one of these projects, which involved training women and children, had reportedly received approval from local authorities.
Mr. Reynolds said that even though his parents were “deemed innocent” by a judge and were not charged, they had been detained in severe circumstances, including a maximum security jail.
