Sir Keir Starmer is “not standing on the right side of history” with his promise to recognize a Palestinian state, according to a British-Israeli lady who is being held captive by Hamas. Emily Damari claimed that the prime minister of the United Kingdom “risks rewarding terror” after being detained by Hamas for almost 15 months and being freed in January.
On Tuesday, Sir Keir declared that unless Israel agreed to a truce and revived the idea of a two-state solution, the UK will recognize a Palestinian state in September. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that “Hamas’s monstrous terrorism” was rewarded by the UK’s position. The UK is one of several nations expressing alarm over the situation in Gaza, where UN-backed experts claim that a famine scenario is presently unfolding.
Speaking at a press conference following Tuesday’s emergency cabinet meeting, Sir Keir stated that the “intolerable situation” in Gaza and his worry that “the very possibility of a two-state solution is reducing” were the reasons behind his announcement of the proposal.
In addition to stating that his “primary aim” was to ameliorate the situation in Gaza, he also demanded that Hamas immediately free all captives, agree to a truce, disarm, and acknowledge that it would not participate in the governance of Gaza.
