According to local authorities, a cable car accident in the Piedmont area of Italy on Tuesday resulted in at least six injuries and the deployment of helicopters to rescue over 100 more. According to the Italian fire service, the incident occurred at approximately 11:25 am when two cabins struck the upper and lower stations of the cable car close to the village of Macugnaga.
Following the accident, the ski lift was suspended and the surrounding ski slopes were closed. Police, firefighters, and the Civil Alpine Rescue Service promptly arrived on the site and assisted in the evacuation of the people—mostly tourists—who were stranded on the mountain. One of the cabins struck a station barrier after failing to slow down as planned, according to Filippo Besozzi, managing director of lift operator Macugnaga Trasporti e Servizi.
Fortunately, no one’s life is in jeopardy and there are no severe injuries. A 59-year-old man has an injury on his arm. He said, “Others have had minor grazes.” Built in 1962, the Macugnaga cable car had a €2 million renovation in 2023 to replace its cabins and motors. In recent years, Italy has experienced a number of significant cable car accidents. The most recent event occurred in April, when four individuals perished close to Castellammare di Stabia.
