In what the governor of the northern US state of Minnesota called “politically motivated” attacks, a gunman shot two Democratic state senators in the state early Saturday, killing one and wounded the other.
The shootings occurred as thousands of Americans were getting ready to demonstrate against Republican President Donald Trump’s policies in the midst of severe political tensions in the country. Officials said that a big manhunt was still in progress and that the alleged attacker was still at large.
Attorney General Pam Bondi and US President Donald Trump denounced the “horrific violence” and promised to punish anyone responsible to “the fullest extent of the law.” Governor Tim Walz addressed a news conference after state lawmaker Melissa Hortman, the former speaker, and her husband Mark were murdered at their home close to Minneapolis.
The governor’s voice broke with emotion as he stated that state senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, had been shot and injured. Officials were “cautiously optimistic” that they would recover, he added. Targeted political violence was committed here,” Walz told reporters. Our democracy is built on the foundation of peaceful conversation. We don’t use violence or threaten to use force to resolve our issues.
