According to a source familiar with the situation, U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth sent information on a March strike on Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis to his wife, brother, and personal attorney in a chat group, which Reuters reported on Sunday.
The disclosure of a second Signal chat comes at a particularly delicate time for Hegseth, as senior officials were removed from the Pentagon last week as part of an investigation into an internal leak. It also raises additional concerns regarding Hegseth’s use of an unclassified messaging system to share extremely sensitive security details.
Hegseth shared details of the attack in the second chat, which were similar to those that The Atlantic magazine made public last month after Jeffrey Goldberg, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, was inadvertently included in a separate chat on the Signal app, opens new tab, with all of President Donald Trump’s top national security officials.
The second discussion, which involved around a dozen individuals and was arranged during his confirmation process to discuss administrative matters rather than specific military preparations, according to the person familiar with the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
According to pictures the Pentagon has made public, Hegseth’s wife, Jennifer, a former Fox News producer, has been to private meetings with foreign military counterparts. In March, Hegseth’s wife was seated behind him at the Pentagon during a meeting with his British counterpart.
