During the US president’s second term, he helped Donald Trump staff Washington with supporters, published books written by Trump, and funded millions for his 2024 campaign. In addition to managing US ties with other South and Central Asian nations, Sergio Gor is now expected to serve as Trump’s man in India. Trump said this week that Gor, his head of people, will be the next US ambassador to India. He referred to Gor as a “great friend” and said he could “fully trust” him to carry out the plan.
The 38-year-old was appointed at a time when Trump’s punitive tariffs on India have soured ties between the two nations. In India, opinions on Gor’s nomination have been divided. Some analysts believe that having a close Trump associate in the position is good for India-US relations. However, Trump’s choice to send his India ambassador to South and Central Asian nations, including Pakistan, with which India has a hostile relationship, has drawn criticism from others.
According to experts, Gor’s expansive regional mission puts India at risk of Washington going too far in its dealings with Pakistan, particularly on the Kashmir issue, which is a red line for India. “There will probably be difficulties as a result of the special envoy’s extra role, at least in India. According to Alyssa Ayres of the Council on Foreign Relations, an American think group that focuses on US foreign policy, India generally does not want to be “hyphenated” with Pakistan.
It may also be Trump’s way of telling Delhi that he doesn’t believe the ambassadorship to India has to be a full-time position, according to Lawrence Haas, a former senior White House official and senior fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council.
