After a neighboring volcano threw an ash tower miles into the sky on Wednesday, international airlines canceled flights to and from Bali, a vacation island in Indonesia, leaving travelers stranded.
A day earlier, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki on Flores island erupted a nine-kilometer (5.6-mile) tower, disrupting at least 16 international routes, according to a statement from Bali’s international airport’s general manager.
Ahmad Syaugi Shahab announced on Wednesday that all flights from Singapore, Hong Kong, Qatar, India, Australia, Malaysia, China’s Pudong, and South Korea’s Incheon were either delayed or grounded.
According to an AFP journalist at Bali’s airport, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, India’s IndiGo, Singapore’s Scoot, and Australia’s Jetstar, Qantas, and Virgin Australia all listed flights as cancelled on Wednesday.
“Volcanic ash poses a significant threat to safe operations of the aircraft in the vicinity of volcanic clouds,” AirAsia stated when it made a number of cancellation announcements. Cathay Pacific of Hong Kong also announced the cancellation of its flights and rescheduled its operations to and from Bali for Thursday.
