In the face of changing social dynamics, people in the United Arab Emirates are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) for friendship, relationship counsel, and even love.
This increase in the use of AI companions indicates a more general change in the expectations for relationships and emotional conduct in the digital age. Andreas Hassellöf, CEO of Ombori and Phygrid, stated, “This trend highlights a growing willingness to redefine companionship through technology in the UAE, where digital infrastructure and smartphone usage are exceptionally high.
Even if text-based AI companions are still the most popular, Hassellöf noted a noticeable trend towards more immersive, multi-modal encounters that include both visual and aural components. AI girlfriend applications are increasing dramatically globally, especially among younger demographics,” he stated.
According to Hassellöf, who cited worldwide behavioural statistics, one in four individuals have flirted with AI chatbots, indicating a shift in how people, particularly digital natives, investigate sexual and emotional connections.
This worldwide trend is evident in the UAE, with strong local adoption of generative AI technology. According to Horizon Grand Vew Research, the AI companion industry in the United Arab Emirates was estimated to be worth $734 million in 2024 and is expected to reach $3.6 billion by 2030. The nation is positioned to take the lead in the Middle East and Africa, holding 2.6% of the worldwide market.
