Heathrow Airport is one of several major European airports hit by a cyber-attack that disrupted electronic check-in and baggage systems. The airport has warned travelers of possible delays as staff are forced to rely on manual processes.
The problem stems from a cyber-related disruption to software provided by Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of RTX. The affected system, known as Muse, allows multiple airlines to share the same check-in desks and boarding gates. With the outage, many airlines across Europe have been forced to switch to manual check-in.
Brussels Airport confirmed that the attack on Friday night left passengers being checked in and boarded by hand, leading to long queues. Berlin’s Brandenburg Airport also reported longer waiting times for flights due to the same issue.
RTX said it was “aware of a cyber-related disruption” at select airports and assured that engineers were working to restore operations. The company stressed that the issue only affected electronic check-in and baggage drop services, and that manual systems could be used as a temporary solution.
At Heathrow, British Airways was largely unaffected after switching to a back-up system. But several other airlines faced long delays. Passenger frustration quickly grew as queues stretched across terminals.
