In one of the bloodiest internal conflicts since the conclusion of significant Israeli operations in the enclave, armed members of the Dughmush family and Hamas security personnel have engaged in deadly skirmishes in Gaza City, killing at least 27 people.
Witnesses reported that clan militants and masked Hamas gunmen engaged in gunfire close to the city’s Jordanian hospital. Security forces surrounded them and engaged in fierce combat to apprehend them, according to a top official in the interior ministry, which is controlled by Hamas. According to the ministry, “an armed assault by a militia” claimed the lives of eight of its members.
Since violence started on Saturday, eight Hamas fighters and 19 members of the Dughmush tribe have been slain, according to medical authorities. Witnesses reported that a Hamas force of around 300 militants moved to raid a house block where Dughmush gunmen were entrenched, causing hostilities to break out in the southern Gaza City neighborhood of Tel al-Hawa.
Residents, many of whom had been displaced several times throughout the war, reported scenes of terror as dozens of families fled their homes under heavy bombardment. According to one local, “people weren’t escaping Israeli attacks this time.” From their own people, they were fleeing.
