According to the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency, Meta has expressed regret after a social media message by an Indian chief minister was incorrectly translated on many of its platforms, giving the impression that he had passed away.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his sorrow at the loss of an actress on Tuesday by posting a condolence message in Kannada on Facebook and Instagram. However, they wrongly said that Mr. Siddaramaiah had “passed away” when the posts were automatically translated into English.
According to a Meta representative who talked to PTI on Thursday, the website “fixed an issue that briefly caused this inaccurate Kannada translation. It was incorrectly reported that he had passed away in the original article that included him honoring renowned actress B Saroja Devi.
Mr. Siddaramaiah criticized Meta’s Kannada auto-translation option after the error, saying it was “misleading users” and “distorting facts.” He cautioned that when it came to formal correspondence, such mistranslations were particularly risky.
KV Prabhakar, Siddaramaiah’s media advisor, wrote to Meta on Thursday, requesting that it correct the translation and halt Kannada auto-translation for a while till it becomes more accurate. In order to avoid similar mistakes, he further recommended the business to collaborate with Kannada language specialists.
