Andrew Tate, an online demagogue and self-described misogynist, was charged with human trafficking and creating an organised crime gang to sexually exploit women after he and his brother, Tristan, arrived at a Romanian police station on Monday.
Both siblings registered with authorities in Bucharest early Monday as part of the legal process for the extensive inquiry that Romanian prosecutors in the eastern European country began in December 2022.
Together with his brother, British-American kickboxer-turned-social media influencer Andrew Tate has amassed millions of male followers by expressing strong views on female subservience, male supremacy, and riches. Rights activists have cautioned against the growing influence of the manosphere, a digital environment that supports “red pill” culture, male supremacy, and anti-feminism, among young boys and men.
Nearly all social media platforms banned him because of his inflammatory content. However, he restored his account once tech tycoon Elon Musk bought over X, which was then known as Twitter, in 2022. Tate is a staunch admirer of US President Donald Trump, of whom Musk is currently a prominent adviser.
Tate once asserted that women should “bear responsibility” for experiencing sexual assault, and he currently has 10.7 million followers on X. As an illustration of his misogynistic bravado, he stated in a February 19 post on X: “Still true. Hate me as much as you like.
