Anthropic has stated that it will not back down in a dispute with the US Department of Defense (DoD) about how its artificial intelligence (AI) technology is used. Dario Amodei, the firm’s CEO, said on Thursday that his company would prefer not deal with the Pentagon than approve to applications of its technology that could “undermine, rather than defend, democratic values
His statements came two days after he met with US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to discuss requests that Anthropic embrace “any lawful use” of its technologies. The discussion ended with a threat to withdraw Anthropic from the DoD’s supply chain. These threats do not change our position: we cannot in good faith comply with their request,” Amodei stated.
Anthropic is concerned about the possible use of its AI tools, such as Claude, for two purposes: “mass domestic surveillance” and “fully autonomous weapons. According to Amodei, “such use cases have never been included in our contracts with the Department of War, and we believe they should not be included now.”
In September, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order naming the Defense Department as the Department of War.If the Department decides to discontinue Anthropic, we will try to provide a smooth transfer to another provider,” Amodei stated.
