Anthropic Sues the US Government for Describing it as a Risk

Anthropic, an artificial intelligence (AI) business, has filed a first-of-its-kind lawsuit against the US government on claims that it is a “supply chain risk”. The AI firm’s CEO, Dario Amodei, and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth have been openly feuding over the company’s unwillingness to grant the military unrestricted use of its AI technologies.

The Pentagon replied by designating Anthropic as the first US company to be labeled a “supply chain risk,” but Anthropic said in a complaint filed on Monday against a number of US government departments that this was illegal and unprecedented.

A spokesperson for the US Department of Defense declined to comment, citing a policy regarding pending litigation. Anthropic’s lawsuit claims that the Trump administration is penalizing the company for refusing to comply with the government’s ideological demands, a breach of its protected expression and an attempt to punish the company for not cooperating.

These measures are unprecedented and unlawful. In its California complaint, Anthropic said that the constitution prohibits the government from using its immense power to punish a firm for its protected speech.
